Colts place Sanders on IR list

The Indianapolis Colts placed safety Bob Sanders on the injured reserve list Friday, ending his season. Sanders reportedly suffered a torn biceps during last Sunday's triumph over the San Francisco 49ers and was to undergo surgery. The former NFL defensive player of the year continues to be plagued by injuries. Sanders missed the first five games of the season as he recovered from offseason knee surgery. The unbeaten Colts also placed cornerback Marlin Jackson on the season-ending IR list, the Associated Press reported. Jackson suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Wednesday's practice. Another Colts cornerback, Kelvin Hayden, is to miss as much as four weeks because of a knee injury, according to the Indianapolis Star. Also, wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez underwent arthroscopic knee surgery, further delaying his return. He has not played since the opening game of the season.

According to the team's Web site, Westbrook still is expected to play Sunday night at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys with first place in the NFC East at stake.
Broncos to sign Law

The Denver Broncos are about to sign veteran cornerback Ty Law, according to several reports. The Denver Post reported that the Broncos have not yet announced the move but it may be related to recent struggles by reserve cornerbacks Jack Williams and Alphonso Smith. Law was with the New England Patriots while Josh McDaniels, the Broncos' first-year head coach, was an assistant with the Patriots. Law played seven games last season for the New York Jets. He has 52 interceptions in 14 NFL seasons for the Patriots, Jets and Kansas City Chiefs.

Porter says Brady has 'own set of rules'

Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter said that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has "his own set of rules." "When a guy can tell a ref when to throw a flag and he gets it and stuff like that, I mean he got his own rules," Porter said during his weekly segment Thursday on the league-owned NFL Network, according to a written account of the comments on the league's Web site. "They made the whole 'Don't go at the legs' [rule] because of Tom. So whenever he feels that somebody is coming at his legs, he just points at the ref and he gets the flag. So you got to honestly say that he has his own set of rules." The Dolphins play at New England on Sunday.

Colts' Sanders done for season?

The Indianapolis Colts will be without Bob Sanders, their talented but injury-prone safety, for a significant amount and time and perhaps for the remainder of the season. According to the Indianapolis Star, Colts Coach Jim Caldwell said that Sanders will have to undergo surgery for an injury to his left elbow and could be sidelined for at least a month. ESPN reported that the former NFL defensive player of the year will be out for the rest of the season because of a torn biceps tendon. Sanders was hurt in last Sunday's triumph over the San Francisco 49ers and sought a second opinion from orthopedist James Andrews. Sanders missed the first five games of the season while recovering from offseason knee surgery.
Bryant to enter NFL draft

Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant told ESPN that he will enter the NFL draft next spring. "I feel this is the best decision for me," Bryant said, according to the network. "It's what God wants me to do. I'm going to start my training Tuesday in Tampa." The NCAA announced Thursday that Bryant's final appeal to be reinstated this season had been denied. He is to remain suspended for the rest of this season and is not to regain his eligibility to play until September 2010. Bryant was ruled ineligible by the school for lying to an NCAA investigator about a meeting with Deion Sanders, the former NFL standout who now works for the league-owned NFL Network. Bryant, a junior, is regarded by many NFL talent evaluators as a likely first-round pick in the spring. "This year didn't go the way I wanted it to," Bryant told ESPN.

Women's group calls for Cable suspension

The National Organization for Women has called for the suspension of Oakland Raiders Coach Tom Cable over allegations by his former wife and ex-girlfriend that he hit them in the past. "Tom Cable's history of violence against women raises a question: Why is he still the head coach of an NFL team?" the organization's president, Terry O'Neill, said to USA Today in a written statement via e-mail. "Mr. Cable admits having battered his first wife, and he stands accused of battering two other intimate partners as well. As a survivor of domestic violence, I know that women do not make such accusations lightly. Indeed, women have much more to lose than to gain by coming forward to tell their stories. "The Oakland Raiders, properly, say they are undergoing a 'serious evaluation' of these recent allegations. At the very least he should be suspended during this process.... A man who

Another blackout in Jacksonville

According to the Associated Press, the Jacksonville Jaguars will have their home game Sunday blacked out on local television for the fourth time this season and perhaps could have the lowest attendance at home in franchise history. The Jaguars failed to sell out Sunday's home game against the Kansas City Chiefs the required 72 hours in advance for the game, under NFL rules, to be televised in their local market. It's the fourth local TV blackout of the season for the Jaguars. Owner Wayne Weaver said before the season that he expected all eight of the club's home games this season to be blacked out. But, according to the AP, there is hope within the organization that a Dec. 17 game at home against the Indianapolis Colts will be sold out. According to the AP, it's possible that Sunday's game will have a lower attendance than the franchise low--42,088--set

Clifton, Tauscher to rescue for G.B.?

The Green Bay Packers might have Chad Clifton at left tackle and Mark Tauscher at right tackle this weekend. Clifton hasn't played a full game since the season opener because of an ankle injury and Tauscher recently was re-signed after suffering a knee injury late last season. They perhaps could be asked to rescue a Packers' offensive line that has surrendered 31 sacks this season. "No substitute for experience, and Mark Tauscher and Chad Clifton have a ton of it," Packers Coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. "You see that just in the practice today, just some of the things that they do. Any time you add experience to your group, it's definitely a benefit."

Cable discusses allegations with Davis

According to the Associated Press, Oakland Raiders Coach Tom Cable said he has spoken in recent days to Raiders owner Al Davis about the latest set of allegations against Cable. Cable was accused by two women, a former wife and an ex-girlfriend, of hitting them in the past. The allegations were made in interviews with ESPN that aired Sunday. Cable said Wednesday that his job status was not discussed in his conversation with Davis, the AP reported. "What we talked about is between us and we'll keep it that way," Cable said, according to the AP. The Raiders announced Monday that they and the NFL would undertake a "serious evaluation" of the allegations against Cable. Cable has denied most of the accusations in a written statement but has acknowledged once striking his former wife with an open hand. According to the AP, he stood by that statement Wednesday and

Steelers reportedly to withhold Clark

The Pittsburgh Steelers are likely to withhold safety Ryan Clark from their game at Denver on Monday night, the league-owned NFL Network reported. Clark has a rare sickle-cell trait that can produce life-threatening health complications at high altitudes. He underwent surgery to have his spleen removed after playing a game at Denver two years ago. Doctors have cleared Clark to play in this game and believe the risk of him experiencing similar complications is low but, according to the NFL Network's report, the Steelers are almost certain to order Clark to sit out the game. Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin reportedly won't make any official comments about Clark's playing status for the game before Thursday.
