St. Louis Symmetry

Super 43 puts me in mind of Super XIV, when the Steelers were heavily favored over a Rams team that had been the ugly stepchild of the NFC in 1979, but had to go deep into the fourth quarter before putting the Rams away, 31-19. You may recall the then-Los Angeles Rams got to the big game that season after having gone into Dallas and upsetting the NFC East champs in the division round--in what turned out to be Roger Staubach's last game.

The Cowboys were there because they'd beaten the Redskins in the regular season finale, coming back from 13 points down in the final five minutes to beat Washington 35-34 and take the division championship. The 'Boys got home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, while the Redskins, at 10-6, didn't make the playoffs (and got a funeral wreath thrown in their locker room by the Cowboys' late defensive end Harvey Martin). The reason the Redskins didn't get in? They lost a tiebreaker for the final wild card berth with the Bears, because of something called "net point differential," the total margin of wins and losses between the two teams during the season.

Entering play that final Sunday, the Redskins had a 33-point lead on Chicago in NPD, meaning the only way the Bears could overtake Washington was if the Redskins lost to Dallas and the Bears won their final game by a combined margin of 34 points or more. Well, Washington lost by one. The Bears would have to win by 33.

They won 42-6.

The team that laid down like dogs and died while Chicago used flea flickers and onside kicks and all manner of Harry High School stuff (to quote my man Norm Van Brocklin) to roll up the score?

The St. Louis Cardinals.

Now the Arizona Cardinals.

Steelers 27-17, but that might be my heart talking, not my head.
