Housh Would Be a Catch

The Philadelphia Eagles are one free agent from making another run at the Super Bowl. Lucky for them there's a player available at perhaps their position of greatest need who also has the demeanor to fit in right away.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh is the big, physical presence on the outside Philadelphia has lacked since parting ways with Terrell Owens. Houshmandzadeh can be a possession receiver or burn you deep. He has soft hands, a knack for getting open and runs precise routes.

But just as important, Houshmandzadeh isn't infatuated with himself. He was fine with Chad Ocho Cinco hogging the spotlight in Cincinnati, all the while producing numbers in line with some of the best in the league. Houshmandzadeh has had at least 90 receptions in each of the past three seasons, including a league-leading 112 in 2007, but you wouldn't know it based on how he has carried himself.

Houshmandzadeh would be an ideal mentor to rising young star DeSean Jackson, and his workmanlike attitude would blend seamlessly with the rest of the team. He is a true professional at a position where silly antics from the likes of Owens, Ocho Cinco and Plaxico Burress, among others, can leave fans wondering if the NFL is a variety show or a sports league.

The Eagles rid themselves of that drama by shedding Owens a year after they went to the Super Bowl and since then have sworn off chasing established wide receivers, no matter their production. It's understandable considering how splintered the locker room was during Owens's public feud with quarterback Donovan McNabb.

The Eagles won't have to worry about those circumstances repeating themselves if they sign Houshmandzadeh. Instead, they'll have a perfect fit for their West Coast style of offense and in their locker room. Houshmandzadeh is the No. 1 wideout who can help Philadelphia reach the Super Bowl again and give McNabb another shot at the championship ring he so desperately covets and rightfully deserves.

You'll also note the Eagles have tons of cap space, too.
