Here's how overtime could easily be reformed. If the first score is a touchdown, you win immediately. If you score only a field goal, the other team gets one chance to move the ball down the field. If they score a touchdown, they win.
A simple change like this would give teams a strong incentive to go for touchdowns instead of field goals, which would be both more exciting and more fair. There is nothing worse than watching a great comeback get ruined by an anticlimactic overtime.
I know the NFL is concerned about the length of games, but this is a real problem which needs to get fixed...
