Sherman Smith, the Redskins' offensive coordinator, was the Tennessee Titans' longtime running backs coach and was with Steve McNair, who was shot to death today in Nashville, from his rookie season with the Titans:

"From the first day he came in, you could definitely tell he was a very talented young man. I think it was the third year he became the starter and you could just see his work ethic. You could see the talent, but he worked hard at it. He competed. You always stood a chance 'cause he was on the field. There wasn't a throw that you didn't think he could make. It didn't make any difference what was going on. We always thought he could bring us back. I think he loved the challenge of bringing us back if we were down and he did that so many times for us that he lived up to what he expected from himself.
