Vick Issue Still in Doubt

The protesters outside of Lincoln Financial Field fizzled, Michael Vick did not. He won over mercurial though sodden Eagles fans, with just 19 yards on 4-4 passing. Those fans may think Vick is ready for prime time but the experts aren't so sure. The issue's still in doubt and that's a good thing for Vick. It means he didn't screw up. It means he could be great. Like answer E) on a standardized test: "There is not enough information to solve the problem" yet.

To review, Vick's low light came on his second touch -- a bootleg scramble with McNabb lined up as receiver. While Vick moved well on his feet, beating the first tackler, he seemed to freeze like he wasn't ready to be hit as the second one approached, and crumpled him. His highlight came later that quarter, on a first-and-10 in the red zone. With McNabb on the sideline Vick completed a 13-yard bullet to wide receiver Hank Baskett. The cheers were audible throughout South Philly.

But much to the chagrin of fans and analysts, Vick only played six plays, all in the first half. Of course, that was to be expected. It was, after all, a preseason game, not a playoff game. Head Coach Andy Reid was "just trying to get [Vick's] feet wet," as he explained his post game press conference. He did that, got Vick completing passes and then promptly took him out while his confidence was still high. It was Reid at his best -- effectively and frustratingly taciturn.

That strategy was lost on the nearly sold out crowd. After McNabb, who went a respectable 21-36 for 244 yards, threw an interception, the boo-Birds came out, chanting "we want Vick!"

But that's why they cut off beer at halftime. Eagles fans, especially those in the Linc, are all heart and $6.50 Miller Light. Once they sleep this one off they'll wake up Friday and, for the most part, will realize two things. Donovan McNabb is great quarterback, and Michael Vick is a very exciting option at backup. It might be too much to expect them select E), though when asked about Vick.
