Cheer For What?

There are obviously two sides to this argument. I follow a team that has never had "cheerleaders" in the traditional NFL sense (there was a stretch in the middle of the decade when the Browns brought squads in from local high schools, which was discontinued a few years back). It was never officially stated, but the word in the ether always had something to do with drunk men verbalizing things to these high school girls that I can't reprint here. There is also, of course, the weather issue in playing in a cold-weather city where temperatures aren't conducive to spandex for good portions of the season.

In that respect, the league could do well to get rid of cheerleaders in an effort to perhaps make the games seem less "misogynistic" toward female viewers. On the other hand, the teams in the league clearly know on which side their bread is buttered.

In the end, as a season ticket holder for a team without cheerleaders, I never find myself sitting at games thinking: "You know what would make this more fun? Women in skimpy outfits." And I say this knowing full well that for a lot of those games -- given the quality of the team on the field--I'd have been better served using my time to watch paint dry.

The NFL game should never need cheerleaders to better sell its product.

This is definitely the least heterosexual thing that I have read on Washingtonpost.com.

Any guy that says cheerleaders are not needed is definitely 100% homosexual. No doubt about it.

This is why Redskins fans are the least respected in the league. Not only are they duped by the most childish owner in pro sports--falling for stupid, big money, free agent signings every single year, they also need cheerleaders to verify and solidify their masculinity and sexuality. For real, you all need to be real fans and tell Snyder to stop wasting your time and money, enjoy your boner juice after the game and make an effort to enjoy Redskins football (whatever that is) even when they stink... then you'll be real fans.

Respect due to Cleveland... from a Steelers fan.

grow up and grow a pair...if that's the only reason you're "watching" football then it's time for you to go back to the sandbox.

BIGDMJST5: No self respecting Cleveland fan would EVER, EVER give props to the Steelers. So your opinion means nothing to us Redskins Fans.

Hail to the Redskin-ettes! Best looking cheerleaders in the league. Even the Asian girls have backyards you could sit your remote on! hubba-hubba.

Men with small dicks hate gays.

Two thoughts:

1. Eye candy rots the brain, but it is sooooooo delicious.

2. A bit of a chill in the air is actually an enhancement to the Spandex experience -- especially on the close-ups.

Thanks for this Dan. And I agree with you.

Dan,

Beautiful women in skimpy outfits makes everything more fun.

Hey all homophobes - news flash - your ignorant (and you can't write a full sentence). Gays cherish beauty in all its forms especially the human form. As a group, they would be the most tolerant of an individual's preference towards sexy dancers entertaining you, Dawg, but also families with young children at an NFL game.

Or, a MAN who has daughters.

I hope all you testosterone-laden goofballs who call this viewpoint gay are kidding. Typically, when you don't have a rational viewpoint of your own, you insult your opponent with buzzwords.
