This Ain't No Fantasy

This is not a chicken-or-egg question. Fantasy football exists because the NFL is so popular.

Fans, by nature, live vicariously. The NFL and all professional sports are popular for a million reasons including that the players are the very best in the world at their particular profession. But the truth is that we can all, at some level, imagine being able to do what they do. In fact, as children we most likely ran around pretending to be our heroes.

Fantasy football, therefore, is whatever you make it.

Of course the official version of Fantasy Football is that pick-your-own team game where you are forced to root for players who don't wear the hometown colors. So is it more popular than the NFL? Sure, in Nerdville.

Fantasy football is a fun diversion for the rest of us and a compulsive passion for those who have yet to discover the world away from their computer. I mean, it's pretty cool to put some of these players together. After all, who wouldn't want to have Tom Brady and Randy Moss on the same team. Oh yeah, that exists already. Well then how about Brett Favre and Adrian Peterson? Can you imagine?

The point is that Fantasy Football already exists every Sunday. There is a reason why the NFL is the most popular sport in America. It's a lot of fun to watch and it allow us to wonder and then find out what's gonna happen every single week.

Fantasy Football has to wait for the real results to come in. And then an algorithm about as complicated as the economic ones that almost caused Great Depression II is run and you find out whether your team this week was better than those of others. So go ahead, you Fantasy Football players, and cheer for the math equations while I cheer for my favorite team, the Cleveland Browns, as they win every single game this year. Yep, that's real fantasy football.

Yup, go ahead with the self-promotion. While you're at it, please do disparage those complex formulas known to 9-year-olds as "addition" and "multiplication."
