Sproles Is the Go-To

Though initially questioned by many for placing the Franchise Tag on the diminutive Darren Sproles, the San Diego Chargers appeared wise Monday night when he proved the difference in a surprisingly close battle with the Raiders.

Sproles has the agility and straight-line speed that LaDainian Tomlinson used to have. Unfortunately, if Monday night's performance is any indication, the trademark acceleration that LT used in becoming the best all-around back of the mid 2000s has left him. Tomlinson struggled to beat Oakland's linebackers to the edge and too rarely left defenders in his wake as he had earlier in his career.

In an offense centered around his versatility, Tomlinson might still be a successful bell-cow runner. With the more explosive and youthful Sproles stealing carries, however, LT's role as a go-to runner may have left with his acceleration.
