Fear Not, Philly

When Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb went down with a fractured rib two things happened:

1. People began to wonder if the Eagles can survive without him.
2. Michael Vick smiled.

Here is my reaction:

The fact is, McNabb has gone down before and it hasn't spelled the end of the world for the Eagles. From AJ Feeley to Jeff Garcia, when McNabb has been replaced, his backups have come in and done well.

Even the immortal Koy Detmer had success while McNabb was on the shelf.

More and more I believe that great coaching and a great offensive system can make an average quarterback look very good and a good quarterback look like an all pro.

Case in point -- the New England Patriots.

Most people consider Tom Brady one of the best three quarterbacks in the game (along with Manning and Brees.) To date, his resume reflects him being the best. When his knee exploded last year the Patriots replaced him with Matt Cassel, a QB who hadn't started a game since Bill Clinton was in office.

By the end of the year the Patriots were 11-5 and would have been a strong Super Bowl threat if not for a jacked up NFL playoff system. Eagles fans should relax. Even if McNabb is out for an extended period, the team will still be in playoff contention.

Here's a little secret, I am 100% sure that McNabb will be back by Week 3, no matter how much pain he's in. He knows if either Kevin Kolb or Michael Vick performs well in his absence, he may never get his job back. McNabb is in the twilight of his Eagles career -- he can't afford to take his time. Without question, Kolb and Vick are chomping at the bit to make sure he loses more than some cartilage in his rib.

No real Philly fan ever questions whether the Eagles can survive without McNabb..we always do. but the Vick issue will gain strength, even though it shouldn't. Vick would put up Delhommian numbers right now if he started.he's simply not ready.

and McNabb will start this weekend.

The NFL isn't about star QBs anymore. You don't need a QB to win it. These days you just need someone who won't lose it for you.
