When Cousins Marry

When cousins marry and procreate, the future theoretically doesn't look promising and that's what happened the Run and Shoot hooked up with the old college Wishbone to create what we now lovingly call the Wildcat.

I'm not smart enough to figure out the intricacies of the Wildcat because, as football guys will tell you, none of us mere mortals could possibly understand the rocket science of NFL football. But I think it's more about DNA than rocket science and I say the Wildcat is a niche offense that will succeed on certain occasions but it's not the way to build a team.

One of these days, the revolution in the quarterback position - you know the revolution we've been hearing about for a couple of decades with every new athletic rookie quarterback - is actually going to occur. Some quarterback such as Michael Vick or Vince Young or maybe Tim Tebow is actually going to be a tipping point player, forcing the entire position to be re-thought. And that's when the Wildcat might work. If the same personnel can run it the same as they run everything else, it just might become a permanent weapon in a championship team's formula.

Until then, see Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Kurt Warner for how to play quarterback - and thus, offense, in the NFL.
