It's Tebow's choice


What Tim Tebow does or does not sponsor or associate himself with off the field, even if it hits the sponsorship angle of the Super Bowl, makes no difference to me. Ironically enough, I believe in Tebow's right to choose. To choose which entities to align himself with, and those entities' rights to promote whatever their philosophies may be. I may disagree with them vehemently (and trust me, in this case, I do), but that's not the point.

The point is not to convert, ignore, attack, or rid your environment of everyone who doesn't agree with you. Would that Focus on the Family, the organization sponsoring the commercial Tebow will appear in, believed the same thing.

In the larger sense, Tebow had best get while the getting's good. It's a near-certainty that he won't make it in the NFL as a quarterback, and he'll have to find another way to make a living and get his message across.

SNL had it right. Whenever Tebow runs the option he'll always CHOOSE to keep the ball.

Here's a challenge to all the WaPo sports writers who like to take swipes at Focus on the Family: Read one of James Dobson's books cover to cover. Spend some time looking at how FoF spends its money vs other non-profits and then if you have any guts come back and write a mea-culpa explaining why the people working there have done more to help hurting and needy people in American and around the work than all the sportswriters in America combined.

Augh! It isn't about TEBOW! It's about having MY enjoyment of MY favorite sport HIJACKED by political ads of ANY stripe! This is a watershed moment - until now, the Superbowl has been about football, beer, fast food, silly commercials, and good music, mixed in with a decent dose of "feel-good-about-America" - politically free of BS from either side of the arguments that plague us virtually everywhere else.

Mr. Tebow is welcome to make his ad. I do not fault him for putting his money where his heart is so to speak. I take umbrage with CBS and the NFL for politicizing the greatest sporting event in the world and thus diminishing my enjoyment of it.

I wouldn't worry too much about him. I see all the shirtless pics as a way to prepare for a post-college career as a gay icon.
