Overrated is an understatement

Growing up in the 1970's, excluding home teams, folks were either fans of the Steelers or the Cowboys. I loved Roger Staubach and the boys in silver and blue. Bob Hayes streaking down the sideline, Walt Garrison's tough running and the stadium with the hole in the roof so God could watch his team are memories that have a permanent place in the sports trivia hard drive I call a brain. So why do I fervently loath the present day version? It began when the Cowboys passed on selecting my college teammate Mike Singletary when they had a pick in the 1981 draft at the end of the first round. Mike was of course chosen by the Chicago Bears at the start of the second round and played fairly well for the next dozen years prior to being selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on his first ballot. My dislike for "America's Team" was permanently solidified when the Cowboys ruined our perfect season while I was part of the championship Redskins team circa 1991.

So are the Cowboys overrated? The Cowboys, led by Troy Aikman, had a nice run in the mid 90's but have since been pedestrian at best. Still, every year pundits line up to choose them as their surprise Super Bowl pick. Overrated is an understatement when discussing the Cowboys and their standing in the sports world. They regularly lead the league in merchandise sales, have a billion dollar stadium hosting the Super Bowl this year and can't believe they haven't received a bye into this season's championship game. Why should they have to play the regular season at all? Come on commissioner Goodell, get with the program! Jerry Jones does almost as many commercials as that Papa John's pizza guy and now works as his pitchman. Tony Romo has one average outing after another but retains his superstar status. The QB for "America's Team" annoyingly always wears his hat backwards, serially dates celebrities, takes mid-season jaunts to the tropics and regresses annually as a player (sorry for the cheap shots Jerry and Tony but hey, I'm a Redskins fan). So yes, the Cowboys are the most overrated team of the past 14 seasons.

How does the new look NFC east shake out for the 2010 NFL season? The Eagles, after investing heavily in Kevin Kolb, stubbornly stick with their chosen successor to Donovan McNabb and tank. The Cowboys, after finally winning a playoff game last season, miss the playoffs following a regular season in which they lead the league in penalties (see holding call vs the Redskins last Sunday night). The Eli Manning to Hakeem Nicks combo cools off and the Giants eek into the playoffs in the wild card spot. Donovan McNabb plays like the 2009 version of Brett Favre and the Redskins win the division.

Mike Shanahan wins coach of the year, not because the Redskins return to respectability, but because Albert Haynesworth gives good effort all season and makes his third Pro Bowl squad. Redskins MVP, as chosen by the fans, miraculously results in a three way tie between Shanahan, McNabb and Haynesworth. All is right with the world and I can resume wearing my Redskins hoodie in the winter months only.

You have a very good imagination and very optimist but reality is we will be a .500 team this year at best. Did you see how we played? No offensive touchdown? We can't move the ball vertically? Our offense was shut down? McNabb is old and predictable. Do you know why he has to be traded by the hated Eagles? Because they know better. Do you know why Shanahan was on the streets? Haynesworth? Are you even reading the news? Did you even see the Giants? And the Cowboys, you discount them? They will punish us when we go to Jerry's world in Dec 19! Their offensive line unit is back. We were just lucky to win it. Just watch the game please!
