Officials Let One Slip

Not that Denver needed help beating the New York Jets yesterday, but the Broncos got it anyway on a controversial sequence during their 34-17 victory on a rainy day at Giants Stadium.

Midway through the first quarter, Jets wide receiver Brad Smith took a direct snap and tried to hand off to wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery, but the ball got away. Cotchery jumped on top of it and was immediately hit, popping the ball loose.

Safety Vernon Fox picked it and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown. The score, however, should not have counted because Cotchery was touched down at the spot, and the play therefore was over.

Officials didn't see it that way, ruling Cotchery had never gained possession. Replays clearly showed he had the ball on the ground before it squirted out of his control.

Jets Coach Eric Mangini wanted to challenge the call, but because officials said Cotchery did not have possession, it was still a fumble and not reviewable.

"I felt like Jerricho had possession," Mangini told reporters. "They felt he didn't."

This particular play did not affect the outcome, but it underscores a need to revisit the replay system. The sooner the better too.

Waiting until the offseason to address what's reviewable may result in a significant blunder during the playoffs. With the technology available these days, there's no excuse for that to happen.

To Err is human but to FORGIVE is devine! Now let's change the damn system and insitue a NEW more efficient workingable electronic REVIEW system NOW ! Those poor humans(officials ) have suffered enough visible humiliatiion!

You failed to mention the Jets touch down when Jones rolled "over" the defensive player to get a Jet touch down. Clearly his elbow was down.......

The ball was still moving, he never had it completely trapped thats why the ball came out so easily. Had his body truly trapped the ball there's no way it comes out. Funny thing is the samething happened to Eddie Royal where he had to jump on the ball twice to truly trap the slick football.

You also fail to mention the clear fumble by the Jets which was recovered by the Broncos but given to the Jets without hesitation, and another play was run before a challenge flag could be thrown.

i agree that it looked as though he had possession before he was hit, but your assertion is breaking this down to milliseconds. at some point supercomputers will be breaking down calls to billionths of a second. let's not go there. a good hit jarred the ball loose, in the cold, and rain. let's not sterilize sports any furhter.

That's DIVINE.

Well, I admit, I missed that particular play, but I am concerned with the system as a whole. The Steelers (showing my colors here) were robbed of a touchdown on the last play of their game against the Chargers. What killed me was the fact that the officials reviewed it (it was last play of game, so no challenges) and they STILL got it wrong. That is the whole point of the system, to correct things in real time (if possible). I just wonder who the hell they have in the booths, and why they make the decisions they make. Something needs to be fixed in this system.

possession was never obtained by Cotchery, that slippery little pigskin was just under his gut and not in his hands. Otherwise it would not have squirted out. Possession however, should be a reviewable play.

Later in game, similar play, kick by Jets, fumble by kick returner, he was eventually on the ball. Jet comes up and instead of ramming into him and trying to have same thing occur (ball come loose), he just touches him to down him.

I like the replay system as it is. I don't think footbaal would be better served by taking even more of the human element out of the game. Yeah, I agree that there are some controversial calls made, even in the ruling that some plays are not even subject to review, but again, that's the human element that I think makes for a more interesting game. If we go too far with this replay stuff and computerizing the game down to nanoseconds, then we might start thinking about just having robots play the game, or better yet, just have the palayers do a strenuous workout while being monitored for strength, speed, etc., give them a scored, written strategy test and just use supercomputers to calculate the outcome of games!

NFL officiating this year has been extremely poor yet it does not seem to me that the NFL is doing much about it except fining people when they bash the officiating. That makes a lot of sense. I agree a new system is needed, although something might lengthen already too-long games. Perhaps if they eliminated some of the TV timeouts, it would off-set the breaks for pllay reviews. But, I'm not holding my breath on that one!

That was a terrible call.

It looked to me as though the defender punched the ball out from under Cotchery. I agree if he had possession the ball wouldn't have come out so easily.

I can't believe what I am reading. I thought it would be universally understood that he had possession and was down, but the play could not be reviewed. You guys think that he didn't have possession!?!?

Ha -- the argument that if he REALLY had possession, then the ball wouldn't have come loose. WHAT?! Are you kidding? The ball can't pop out after having possession? If so, the rule states that it is down. The refs thought he NEVER had possession.

Thomas Jones' elbow CLEARLY did not hit the ground during that run. Watch again. And again. There you go, moron. At least you know the rule.

Granted, the jets were outplayed and Favre sucked. But with the tone set early and playing from behind, it changes the whole game.

I hope somehow the 11-5 Jets get to play the 9-7 Broncos for an easy win in the playoffs.

I think replay should be able to review plays such as the fumble, especially is the whistle has not blown. I think the refs made the right call. The ball popped out way to easily to assume Cotchery had possession. The author is assuming laying on top of a ball means you have full control... not even close to being right.

The NFL in New York watches all the games live. Let someone there make the call for consistency. If they can't get it right, no one will
