Pittsburgh at Washington, Week 9
Monday, 8:30 p.m. (ESPN)
There's cause for happy times at Redskins Park. Washington is a surprising 6-2, with the NFL's leading rusher, a wide receiver having a Pro Bowl start and a quickly jelling coaching staff.
But the Redskins are doing their best not to get self-satisfied. That shouldn't be a problem with a showcase game against the stout Steelers, and a litany of weary and beat-up players. Defensive coordinator Greg Blache called this "the biggest game we've played since I've been here," and punctuating his news conference by, at various points, comparing his unit to the Confederate army, applicants for a job at Giant and a woman getting ready for a hot date.
The Steelers could welcome back RB Willie Parker, who has missed four games with a sprained knee. Who runs, however, could have a tough time against the Redskins, are fifth in the NFL in rushing defense (82.8 yards per game) and have yielded only four touchdowns on the ground. It's just one of several interesting matchups. Redskins QB Jason Campbell takes his streak of 230 passes without an interception -- 56 short of Bernie Kosar's all-time record to start a season -- against the Steelers, who rank in the middle of the NFL pack with six picks but limit foes to the fewest yards per game in the league. And while Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger has struggled to stay upright, the Redskins have struggled nearly as much to knock opposing quarterbacks prone, with only 10 sacks on the season.
