Sunday Line Chatter, Week 12: Games We Might Want to Watch
Colts (+3) at Chargers
larimerd2000: I think I might pick against the Chargers for the rest of the season
Matt Bonesteel: Sanders should be back, right?
bielerd: I know Tomlinson is a little hurt, but Rivers is throwing the heck out of the ball, so why is this team so bad? does it miss Merriman and Turner that much?
larimerd2000: I certainly will this week. The Colts still need wins, are still good enough to get them, and the Chargers are still a fraud that knows it's on the outside looking in. What team has ever rallied round the Norv?
Matt Bonesteel: Tomlinson is actually the healthiest he's been all year, no? and he's been putting up numbers the past coupla weeks.
bielerd: true, I have somehow overlooked the Norvil effect. I really don't respect him much as a head coach.
Matt Bonesteel: The Chargers gave up 277 passing yards to JaMarcus Russell, and 261 to Trent Edwards. Peyton = way better than either of those two jokers. Colts.
bielerd: but I think Sanders is still questionable, which always impacts the Colts' defense negatively
bielerd: I dunno, I kind of feel like the Chargers just can't go to 4-7, partly b/c I just can't see them losing that division. Chargers
Packers (+2 1/2) at Saints
bielerd: Luv the matchup b/t the Saints' passing offense and the Packers' pass defense
bielerd: that is one kleptomaniacal crew Green Bay has in the secondary
bielerd: a big question here is whether Reggie Bush will return
bielerd: he supposedly looked much better in practice on Thursday
Matt Bonesteel: that offense isn't quite the same without him, even though it never seems he does too much.
larimerd2000: The Saints will be one-dimensional without him. Actually, with or without him
bielerd: It's not like the Saints shouldn't be able to run the ball against the Packers with whoever they have. But I really like the way the Pack is running the ball these days
Matt Bonesteel: Grant finally is fulfilling his fantasy draft position.
bielerd: That was quite the dominating performance last week against the bears by all of Green Bay. including the fans
larimerd2000: The Saints will be at the Superdome for the first time since Oct. 12, so they have that
bielerd: I'll take the Packers, who i think will take an interception to the end zone in this game. because that's what they do
larimerd2000: I also will take the Packers. They're healthier
Matt Bonesteel: And ARodg didn't do much the last time he had to play in a loud dome (Minny--I'm not counting Detroit). I'll take the Saints.
bielerd: that was a loud dome containing the Vikings defense, tho
Matt Bonesteel: He had two safeties.
Vikings (+2) at Jaguars
bielerd: quite an enjoyable subplot in this game
Matt Bonesteel: the long-simmering tensions between the cities of Minneapolis and Jacksonville?
bielerd: um, yeah, there is that one. Minneapolis has never liked the way Jacksonville keeps making eyes at St. Paul
bielerd: but I was referring to another one, the one that produced the quote of the year from Vikes Coach Brad Childress
larimerd2000: I dunno, Matt has a good one on tap from Marinelli. But do tell!
bielerd: I speak, of course, of Childress's retort to ex-Vike and current Jags receiver Troy Williamson's claim that he wants to fight his former coach. Childress described himself as "190 pounds of twisted steel and rompin', stompin' dynamite."
Matt Bonesteel: Was Mean Gene Okerlund interviewing him?
bielerd: I think it was Jesse Ventura
Matt Bonesteel: Or perhaps Gorilla Monsoon. Or Lord Alfred Hayes.
larimerd2000: It is good that that provides a subplot, b/c otherwise this competes for blandest, most thoroughly middling matchup of the year
Matt Bonesteel: It is just vanilla, and both teams are 3-7 ATS to boot. just limp.
larimerd2000: It definitely needs a Rowdy Roddy Piper
bielerd: any thought I had of taking the Jags in this game went out the window when I read that. It's like the anti-Norv effect. What team wouldn't rally around a coach who referred to himself as 190 pounds of twisted steel and rompin', stompin' dynamite?
larimerd2000: True. And the Jags are done. Just done. Paws up. VIkings.
Matt Bonesteel: Spread geekery: Vikes are 1-5 ATS in the last six road games. Jax is 0-5 ATS in the last five home games. So I predict a push.
Matt Bonesteel: I will go with the team with the weirdo coach. Vikes.
bielerd: I also like how Williamson said he would take on Childress with "both hands tied around my back." Just like how he plays wide receiver!
Texans (+3) at Browns
Matt Bonesteel: another scintillating matchup.
bielerd: Brady Quinn's broken finger on his throwing hand is getting 1/1,000,000,000,000th the attention Romo's got
bielerd: meanwhile, Sage Rosenfels's interception-throwing finger on his throwing hand is perfectly healthy
larimerd2000: Isn't it about time Kellen Winslow did something stupid/divisive/controversial?
Matt Bonesteel: He will parachute into the starting lineups. In full pads. He's a soldier.
bielerd: I think he just called out Browns' ownership for not promising to buy him a puppy, like Barack Obama
Matt Bonesteel: I'm going to take the Texans, if only because I can't think of anything worthwhile to say about this game.
larimerd2000: I'm pretty much at a loss to say anything else about this, except that the Texans remain an absolute nightmare on the road. Browns.
bielerd: I like what I saw from the Browns last week, they showed a little toughness. Browns
Redskins (-3 1/2) at Seahawks
bielerd: oh, that pesky half-point
Matt Bonesteel: Playing for the 15th time in the past three seasons, it's Redskins-Seahawks!
larimerd2000: Yeah, it's the new Pats-Colts, but not as exciting
bielerd: Redskins own the Seahawks in the regular season, Seahawks own 'em in the playoffs. This year's Seahawks sure as heck aren't meeting anyone in the playoffs
Matt Bonesteel: Redskins really can't afford to lose their third straight, not with the Giants and Ravens ahead.
bielerd: and Jim Zorn would seem to have an advantage in this game with his intimate knowledge of Seattle's offensive tendencies
bielerd: or is it Seattle's intimate knowledge of Zorn's tendencies?
Matt Bonesteel: his tendency to be a wonderfully odd man.
larimerd2000: Yeah, if the Redskins lose this, they're in huge trouble. I don't think they will be. I'm not sure what Seattle has in its favor beyond home field. I'll take the Redskins
bielerd: Whatev, it's not like Seattle's defense is equipped to stop most offenses
Matt Bonesteel: Redskins, I guess.
bielerd: I too will take the Redskins, because it sounds like Portis is ready and more than willing to play

There was a Saint Norvil, did you know that?
