Best of the decade: top athletes

Here are my 25 candidates for top athlete of the decade. Yes, 25 -- there are that many good candidates.

You can rank them on the jump -- and if you feel especially passionate about one person, state your case in the comments or email us. We'll publish the best reader takes as separate WWW posts as long as you include your full name and city and state in the comments/email.

How could anyone possibly put Peyton Manning ahead of Tom Brady? One title and a bunch of failures in the playoffs. He shouldn't be anywhere near there.

Uhhh where's Michael Vick? The man who changed the game of football forever? But Ray Lewis is on the list because he assisted in the murder of a human, which is much better then killing dogs. Seriously, Lavar Arrington was just as good as Ray Lewis in his prime. All these lists should be Wilbon's picks of the decades, but it's pretty lame to rank lists with so many obvious omissions and baffling inclusions. I wish TK were around to rail Wilbon for this crap. Sigh.

There are certain athletes that transcend their sports and become icons. Babe Ruth, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan.

Tiger Woods is/was well on his way to joining that group. Sure, some of his recent troubles could set him back, but there's no doubt that he transcended golf to become something more. I don't see that there's another athlete in the past 10 years that has come close to that.
