In Wilbon's World

Little drama to Week 14

Turned out to be the perfect day to do your holiday shopping because suspense was at a minimum in games of significance. The Miami Dolphins scored something of an upset in Jacksonville, and other than that the favorites did what they should with only three weeks to play in the regular season. The Redskins weren't favored . . . until JaMarcus Russell came out of the bullpen for relief for Oakland; still it might amount to the Redskins' most impressive win of the season.

3 Best Games of the Day

Chargers over Cowboys: The best and worst in December were true to their nature yesterday. The Cowboys are done. They'll lose in New Orleans next week and wind up missing the playoffs. Why presume? Because Dallas is 1-6 the last two years in December while the Chargers, who have won 16 straight in December, are surging at the end of the season as they have been.

At this point the Chargers might be in better position than the Colts, who are worried about how much rest the starters should get before the playoffs. Chargers have Philip Rivers and the passing game going. They're getting some throwback finishes from LaDainian Tomlinson, and the defense shut down Dallas on the road whenever it was necessary. Two teams going in very different directions.

Packers over Bears: No single player in the NFL has been as big a disappointment as Chicago QB Jay Cutler, who some morons said was the steal-of-the-century when the Bears got him from the Broncos this summer in that trade for Kyle Orton and a bunch of high draft picks.

The Bears were in position to at least save face by splitting with the Packers, but Cutler threw his umpteenth dumb interception of the season, and the Packers opportunistically used it to set up the game-winning touchdown. Packers have improved to the point where only the Saints look better than the NFC.

Saints over Falcons: Gregg Williams's defense came up with the fourth-down stop that secured New Orleans's 13th straight victory. Banged up Falcons were more threatening than I thought they'd be. That could mean the Saints are running out of gas . . . except they'll be reinvigorated by the sight of the Cowboys coming to town.

3 Picks I Nailed

Vikings over Bengals: If Minnesota is going to mount any kind of real threat in January ,the Vikes were going to have to return home to Minneapolis and throttle the Bengals, which they did.

Patriots over Panthers: Not as convincing as most of us thought{hellip}The Patriots don't looked like a shell of themselves{hellip}they were lucky to be playing a bottom feeder in Carolina{hellip}

Colts over Broncos: I hate all the talk about resting starters and Peyton Manning sitting out games between now and the playoffs. They've already got a Super Bowl, and they're the best team in the AFC. . . . But if they give away all their momentum, they're going to get fried by the Chargers. Still, they man-handled a Broncos team perhaps going to the playoffs.

3 Picks I Blew

Raiders over Redskins: When Bruce Gradkowski went to the sidelines, that pick was done. These new Redskins, the ones with no profiles but better results, give the team a better chance to win every week, which is why they've got a real shot at beating the Giants and Cowboys.

Jaguars over Dolphins: Late might be better than never. I picked the Dolphins to make the playoffs, and they stumbled out of the blocks. Remember, Miami played New Orleans better than any opponent this season (even better than the Redskins) . . . A tough schedule might prevent them from overtaking the Patriots for the AFC East title, but that was a clutch win in Jacksonville.

Bucs over Jets: The J-E-T-S looked just fine without injured Mark Sanchez, though it's unthinkable they'll make the playoffs even after climbing above .500. Nice job by Kellen Clemens on the road.

You blew one other pick. On PTI you said Pittsburg over Cleveland. Gotcha and so did the Browns. Signed, a Browns fan from the days of Otto Graham.
